Blinkered Thinking

I had a conversation with a member the other day.  He said business was doing well because a competitor had fallen over (actually his business was already doing well when the competitor fell over.  What he meant was he knew he was doing better than others because “others” had just decreased by one).

As you’d expect I asked what his plans were for attacking the market and he said he didn’t have any plans because “we do wompets, we don’t do widgets” (the products have been granted name suppression).  He would need $100k in funding to buy 15 of these particular units from China and there were all sorts of other REASONS why he couldn’t do it.  And after we talked for a while about how to deal with these REASONS, there was a bit of a pause and then he said “actually we only need 3 pumps, and we can source them locally”.  Then he got up and ran out of the room because he suddenly realised he had a massive opportunity under his nose and he was missing it.

There are opportunities in the market, they’re just not what or where they used to be.  What blinkers us is the things that once made sense.

Onwards and upwards!
