Extinguish the Addiction

I recently bought a small runabout so that I could finally catch some damn fish (it worked).  Lots of people recommended I do the “Day Skipper” course for new boaties.   Funnily enough, some of these people were complete strangers, the only thing in common being that we were both in the same area of the sea at the time…

So my 14 year old son and I did it one weekend recently.  I have to report that Dominic actually scored better than me in the test, but I’m slowly learning to cope.  Note to self: read exam paper carefully.  Anyway, we had an interesting discussion about hazards.  Apparently a fire needs three ingredients: fuel, flame and oxygen. Deprive it of any one of these things and the fire will go out.

I got to thinking about how so many business owners describe their days as tied up in firefighting.  To me that’s a function of how they feed their company’s addiction to them as owners.  The three ingredients of the addiction (and the fires they feel they have to fight) are:
  • Constant presence in the form of long hours physically or virtually at the business
  • Having and giving all the answers (whether asked or not)
  • Needing “control” over all aspects of the operation

Remove one and the fires will stop.

Simplistic?  You betcha.  In reality you might have to deprive the business of all three in order to put the fires out.  But the point is that you are responsible for the fires.  And that will only change when you do.
